Sicilian Red Orange, brand registered in the International Register of Trademarks

The Protection Consortium announced it from Catania. Albertini: “It is necessary to protect our producers from Italian sounding on the markets of countries where the IGP is not recognized and where products from countries that do not recognize the EU protection system arrive”

Arriva la commercial protection internazionale per il marchio Igp Sicilian Red Orange, una necessità visto che l’Arancia Rossa è un single fruit, also much appreciated on mercati extra Ue. The Sicilian Red Orange thus has an extra tool to protect the product from scams and counterfeits. This is the’registration al International Register of Trademarks.

“We have decided to file the international trademark because who, like our producers, esporta generi agroalimentari di qualità made in Italy si trova spesso a dover contrastare episodi di contraffazione e concorrenza sleale da parte di deceptive goods e italian sounding, provenienti anche da Paesi extraeuropei privi di tutele specifiche per le designations of origin e le geographical indications, spiega Elena Albertini, vicepresidente del Consortium for the Protection of the Red Orange of Sicily Igp.

“They represent the mercati esteri I'm a’opportunità irrinunciabile for Italian agri-food products of excellence, which for over a decade have seen exports grow both to Europe and to non-European countries. I produttori italiani e i consorzi di tutela devono quindi dotarsi di strumenti e strategie di difesa dalle contraffazioni and misleading goods that can erode the turnover of the original products or damage their image”, adds Albertini.

Con la international registration del marchio Arancia Rossa di Sicilia il prezioso frutto siciliano sarà ora protetto dalle contraffazioni anche in Canada, Japan, Norway, United Kingdom, United States of America e Russian Federation.

It is a’very timely operation. Japan, Norway, Stati Uniti d’America e Russian Federation they do not recognize the EU denominations, pur avendo l’Unione da tempo chiesto un riconoscimento sulla base del principio di reciprocity. Ma tale strada ideal to be squeezed barred, perché in questi Paesi does not exist una legislazione sui typical products assimilabile a quella delle Dop e Igp.

Inoltre il Canada, for instance, già recognizes, sulla base dell’accordo Ceta di libero scambio con la Ue some denominations, ma not the Red Orange of Sicily IGP. Il United Kingdom, just left the EU, dovrebbe riconoscere il marchio Igp in via transitory, ma better not to risk it on the future, che potrebbe riservare surprises. In particular the Mozzarella di Bufala Campana Dop, right on that market, ha protetto sin dal 2019 the collective mark with the “Grant of Protection”.

“For years, thanks to the careful work of our supervisory structure, abbiamo intrapreso una strategia di tutela del prodotto both in Italy and abroad. On a national and EU level, we are well protected by protected geographical indication and certified traceability and blockchain tools, that we developed among the first in Italy. With the international registration of the trademark we are now taking another decisive step forward for the protection of Blood Orange. A fruit that is increasingly recognized and appreciated also on extra-European markets”, concludes Albertini.
